Costa Rica’s Volcanic Hot Springs: A Natural Spa Experience
Catherine Beres
Tabacon Thermal Resort is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano in the heart of a tropical rain forest. The rooms are large and modern, and each has a true tropical view. Complimentary international calls, Wi-Fi, and valet parking are included.
The highlight of the resort is The Thermal Experience. Thermal waters fed by the volcano flow throughout the resort. The springs are located across the street, about a 5-minute walk. However, the walk back is uphill, so you may want to consider the shuttle that runs every 5 minutes or so. Access to the springs is included with your stay at Tabacon. Day passes can be purchased if you are not staying at the resort. Space is limited, so advanced reservations are highly recommended.
When not lounging in the springs, visit the Sky Adventure park, located about 30 minutes from the Tabacon Resort. if you have come to Costa Rica to zip line, this is the place to do it. The park also offers guided hikes through the rain forest with a series of hanging bridges. You can also choose to kayak, adventure river raft, and bike. Bundled packages are also available.
Buffet breakfast is included in your stay, served at the Ave Del Paraiso restaurant overlooking the thermal pools. It offers plenty of fresh local fruit as well as an egg station and typical breakfast items. There are two restaurants on site that offer traditional Costa Rican meals. While you can rent a car to get around the country, the roads can be very narrow and winding. Try a private transfer, so you can sit back and enjoy the views.
