Congratulations! You finally booked the vacation you so deserve. All that's left to do is pack, and we've got the tips to help you prepare like a pro.

Vacation has been calling your name for a while now and you’ve finally answered. You marched into your travel agent’s office, exclaimed you needed to go as soon as possible, and booked that exciting last-minute vacation you’ve more than earned—insert our applause. But now you need to pack in a hurry and the stress of it has you questioning if this trip was a good idea in the first place. Travel is always a good idea, BTW. Take a deep breath because we’re here to help make last-minute packing an island breeze.

Make a List

Taking the time to make a list might seem like an extra unnecessary step when you need to get packing right away, but this will save you a lot of frustration. Write out everything you need, including quantity. Not only will this eliminate that running-around-the-house-like-a-chicken-without-a-head phase, but it will help ensure you haven’t forgotten anything.

Coordinate those Colors

matching color outfits

You’ve probably heard this tip before, but that’s because it’s a good one. When it comes to your clothes, pick a color scheme and stick to it. Bring pieces that are versatile for easy mixing and matching to create multiple outfits. Grab the top that goes with those jeans, but also that skirt that works with your dress shoes or sneakers.

If You Love It, Leave It

jewelry

This might sound harsh, but if you’re considering bringing an item of extreme importance with you, don’t do it. We’re talking about valuable items like jewelry, family heirlooms, and the teddy bear you’ve had since you were two but deny that you still sleep with. Basically, if you’d be devastated if it gets lost or stolen, leave it at home.

Don’t Overpack, But Overpack

overpacking

Please excuse our contradiction but there’s a method to our madness. We’re not saying pack an extra week’s worth of outfits and shoes, but it’s always a good idea to have backup. We recommend packing two extras in your carry on just in case you end up spilling sangria on your white t-shirt. Don’t sweat it. Accidents happen—and you’ll be prepared.

Check It Twice

Stop! Before you start putting everything in your suitcase, this is a good time to channel your inner Santa and check that list twice. Lay all the items on your bed or floor, grouping them into categories. Then, grab that list and check everything off one more time.

On a Roll

You’ve checked, gathered, and checked again. Now, it’s time for the final step! Before you start throwing everything in, take the care to carefully roll your clothing. This is another popular method of packing for many an avid traveler. Rolling your clothes prevents wrinkles and optimizes space. And you know what that means? Plenty of room for souvenirs.
